Talk:FTP
From DreamHost
As this is not Unix-specific, is the Unix category really appropriate? I've added it to category: Web, as that's probalby a better fit. FTP, in the context of a web hosting company, is used primarily to upload web pages.

- Ah, good call. I was just thinking it made more sense to lump it in with SSH, Telnet, etc. (which aren't really Unix-specific either, now that you mention it). Maybe a more general name like "Tools" or something would be a better category for these things?

Scjessey: In Microsoft OldSpeak, FTP would often be referred to as web publishing. It might be a good idea to use the word publish, as well as upload, GET, and PUT when talking about FTP. Noobs will appreciate the work publish, I think.
loganrapp: Also, where it says that there are "several ways" to find out your Server Name, it would be nice for those ways to actually be listed. This page should be able to guide you through FTP having never requiring to move to another page unless it's linked to it from here.
Re. "Recommended for beginners" - I question whether it is appropriate to say that WebFTP (net2ftp) is "recommended for beginners". First, while it *is* readily available for a use without a client, I don't find it particularly intuitive or convenient to use, and there are some things it does "strangely" (like editing text files). Second, aren't "beginners" better advised to install a "real" ftp client? -- Rlparker 08:32, 12 November 2007 (PST)
